Math DIY: Area Kit
Get your Math DIY on with this quick and easy Area Kit.
Use this kit to introduce, practice, review, and/or assess Area. Set the kit up in your classroom and allow your students to explore. There is no limit to the number of models you can include. You’ll be able to find most, if not all, the materials in your home or in your classroom. Change up the models with the seasons to help keep the concept fresh in your students’ minds.
Before you dive into this Math DIY. check out Mr. Brainy and the Multiple Senses where you’ll learn why it’s so important to begin with the brain in mind. Here’s the link: https://treetopsecret.com/mr-brainy-multiple-senses/
For this Math DIY, you’ll need…
- Plastic Box or Large Container
- Pocket Folder
- Glue Gun
- Toolbox (storage box)
- Rulers and Measuring Tapes (Meter Sticks/Yard Sticks are optional)
- Scissors (optional)
- Area Models (I cover several options in the video)
- Student Worksheet (available inside Math Lesson Plans Membership – Click to Learn More About and Join MLP)
Remind your students the items inside your kit are models – they are not toys. If you include a food item, then you’ll want to emphasize the food is a tool – it is NOT a treat. Write DO NOT EAT on the storage bag or box.
Be sure to measure all the models you include in your kit. Create a Master Answer Key and keep it in an easy to find place.
Please share a picture of your Area Kit with me – I’d love to see it!!!
